I found a good deal on a drivetrain with a 700r4. just wondering if it would hold up in a trail rig behind a mild sbc with a tranny cooler and shift kit? what about adding a different valve body? TIA

Although not the toughest tranny on the market, and considering mine has been giving me problems lately, I'm still a big fan. I've heard good things about mods like the Vette valve body and such, but it's just a nice tranny. Good first gear, OD is great, and it's not a power-robbing hulk like the 400. It should be fairly easy to set up, you just have to be VERY careful when setting up the TV cable. My .02

700 is nice, can be made damn near bullet proof, but you will spend thee $$$$ for that level.

The corvette servo was the hot trick now there are better billet servos cheaper than the vette.
Check out raptor700s site for tons of good info.

The 700 IS a th350 with od, all in all a b tranny with a+ potential. As stated TV set up is critical as is cooling all trannys dislike heat, this one has a phobia of it.

Make sure you get the new TCI valve body, this eliminates the use of the TV cable to control fluid pressure. The TV cable is still there, it is just used for the shift points, but you dont have to worry about frying one in 10 mins, by not having the line pressure correct anymore.....the best thing I have done to mine, it holds up to everything i have thrown at it. Its got a 2500 rpm converter, that TCI valvebody, and the upgraded front pump, i love it just b/c it has overdrive

either way, if you get it, get the TCI valve body, that way you'll never have to worry about the line pressure again

what is the "TV" cable that everyone is refering to. I'm in the process of putting a 700r4 behind a 350 tbi in my YJ. I removed a th400, the shifter i'm using is a B&M. I know it's a 3 speed shifter, can I use it on the 700r4 and only use "D"? When hooking up the kick down cable, is there anything special to know?

the TV cable, is what your seeing as the kickdown cable... it is extremely important to get right, or the tranny wont shift right, and itll end up frying in the tranny...

but my question is, if you ran a manual VB, would you need the TV cable?

You don't need to go and buy a TCI valvebody to get full line pressure, or line pressure not controlled by the TV, The transgo reprogamming kit i install in my built transmissions does that same thing.

The shell upgrade is a must as well as the servo and shift kit.

The 700r4 was prolly the most widest used transmission, and still is but now its electronic. But theres a reason transmission shops are in business!

I'm not a tranny guru, and have never heard of a reprogramming kit. Since the 700r4 isn't computer controlled, I assume this is reprogramming the hydraulic circuits? What do you use to control gear selection?

Can you provide some information on what kits you installed and how they differ from using a manual valvebody? I ask because I'm going to go down that road shortly.

I found this for $75 but no information:
