Hi, I bought the blue 88 YJ from Chip's (Upnover) friend. It has a '76 AMC 360 in it. I'm getting it registered in my name. When I went to have it inspected they were unable to do it due to it having a non factory engine in it and told me I have to go to the tag office and have them look at it. Anybody have any idea how this works or what I need to do to get it registered/inspected? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had looked into this when I was going to put a 360 in the YJ I used to have but I never went through with it. I believe you are required to use an engine from the same year or newer vehicle and you have to have all the emissions parts from the engine donor intact and functional. You then have to go to the DMV officer and have them check it.

I believe the only Jeep with a 360 in it for 88 would be a Grand Wagoneer. You could find one with all the emissions parts working and swap them in and give it a shot.

If it were mine, I would find a 76 CJ7 with a factory V8 and a clean title. Swap the front fenders, grill, hood, and VIN tag onto your YJ. You would be emissions and inspection exempt. You still will have to have the officer look at it (due to the 35 year old vehicle rule) but as long as you don't tell him its a YJ you could get away with it. It would just like a CJ with a YJ tub swap. Of course this is all hypothetical as that would be less than legal. LOL

It should be a just an normal inspection due to its age. Most places never look under the hood. Don't you have any friends in the inspection game? :driver:

Thats what I though too but its incorrect. I took the title for my 74 CJ-6 to the DMV a couple of weeks ago to get it titled in my name and found out the hard way. I have the paperwork in my hand for the appointment with the DMV officer. The paperwork clearly states that all vehicles in NC that are 35 years old or older have to be inspected by the DMV officer when initially titled now. Once that initial inspection is complete, the vehicle no longer needs yearly inspections. I don't believe it is a full safety inspection as they will come to your location to do it (obviously since the vehicle would not be legal to drive). As soon as I have a body tub back on it, I am going to call and see what he needs to look at for the inspection.

Not following you here... As long as it's TITLED as a 35 year old (from date of manufacture) vehicle, there's no need to have anyone look at it...

My guess is that it's titled as an 88. Herein lies the problem. I would find another inspection place... somewhere less "complicated" (i.e. a junk yard that also serves as an inspection station). Find someone with fewer teeth than toes and you should be fine.

That's a similar issue I had with my YJ. I had a 90 YJ with a 91 Chevy V8 in it. The first place I went to was a Firestone shop and they rejected me even though I had dual cats and all the emissions stuff hooked up. I think they were trying to save their reputation by saying "go somewhere else". I went to a local junk yard and found a good ole' country boy who was more impressed with the size of the tires I had than trying to cover his ass. Sticker was on the windshield before he even checked anything.

I am a nc emissions inspector your 88 requires only a safety inspection, but all emissions devices that came on your 88 must be intact to pass. On engine swaps they usuall want and engine of equal or newer year with emissions devices in place. I have not ran into inspecting one with an engine swap but i think i would let it pass if everything was in place. just call dmv and get the real skinny on what they say. more than likely it has to be equal or newer year. Then you can get accompying payper work so you wont run into issues in the future

Talked to the PO yesterday. He told me that he finally got inspected. Word is, he's headed to High Point in it today and then on to URE to wheel it some.
