Gotta 76 CJ5 titled. Does it need inspection in NC at that age? or can I just take the title and insurance card to the tag office and pickup a tag?

I was thinking the law was over 35yrs and its an antique and doesn't need any type of inspection (safety or sniffer).

Clue me in.

Crap...just noticed the title says 1977. Does that mean I have to wait until after the new year?

Got the yr mixed up with my camper. 76 Jayco.

If you want to drie it now youd have to get it inspected and then go get a tag, but if your cheap and dont feel like paying to get it inspected then wait till jan.

The statute says 35 years from date of manufacture and until confirmed by VIN/build date, there's more than a slight chance it could be a '76... there's numerous accounts of vehicles being titled as the the year purchased, rather than the year model!

My '72 has the build date (12/71) on the VIN sticker... OTOH, I didn't get it inspected for the last 2 years it was eligible and never got the "love letter" from DMV :D

my VIN decoded shows 1977. Other than that it doesn't have any identifier of a build date on the firewall plate that I saw.

Thnx for the help guys.

If it was built before 8/76 than it's a 76, this goes for anything thing. If it was built after aug. it's model year is the next year. I'd just get it inspected the last time and tag it.

Yea, just get it inspected. It'll cost you a grand total of $12.50 or something. It's still just a safety insp so it won't be even close the the $30 for an emission.
