77 CJ5 AMC 20 problem

I have a 77 CJ5 with AMC20... it started leaking axle oil from one side so I was going to put bearings and seals in it. I bought it used and it seems someone has converted it to 1 piece axle. I can't find any drawings or manuals that show that modification in detail. I pulled the axle out easy enough...(at least as expected difficulty) and removed the bearing outer race...however the seal seems to have a spacer or something in front of it. Is that correct? the reason I say that is I can't see the edges of seal... it seems to be behind I hope whats a spacer or they would have had to be put in from the inside. since I hope thats not likely I tried to get it out...no luck so far Im trying not to do much damage while I'm working on it. Has anybody here tried to change the inner seal on an amc 20 that has the one piece shaft conversion? any help appreciated

It sounds like who ever did the conversion made a mistake and put the bearing retainer sleeve on the wrong side of the bearing. Some pictures would help to confirm this.

Make sure you get the end play correct when you install it. I had a pain in the ass on the last one I did.

Jeff B that drawing is somewhat helpful except I have angular contact bearings...but it does show a spacer.....

in the axle goes first, the seal, then the spacer then race then install the axle with the bearing on it.

The bearing in the pic is the same as yours, it just is showing with the race still intact.

Thanks for the help! I was scared to mess up the seal until I was sure I could fix it....lol it was a spacer in front of seal. once I banged it out it went back together like a piece of cake.
