I bought a 78 dodge powerwagon about a year ago and am finally going to do something with it. My problem is the motor and tranny. The current motor cranks and seems to run fine but it blows oil out of the dipstick. Any ideas why this would be? The other thing is the tranny. It slips when you put it in drive. If you put it 1st gear then it does fine for that gear. I really do not want to fix the tranny because it has no overdrive anyway. I would prefer to replace it with an overdrive tranny or a 5 speed manual transmission. If I keep the 360, what auto tranny with overdrive and what manual tranny could be used behind it. I am also not opposed to swapping the complete motor, tranny, and transfer case for an efi motor. Not sure which way to go with this truck so any advice or oppinions are appreciated. The truck will not be used off road, I just want to cruise it around and pick up chubby girls

The PCV valve is plugged with crap. Should be on top of the valve cover with a hose going to the air cleaner. Clean it with some spray carburator cleaner till you can make the ball rattle.

Not sure about the tranny or chubby girls...

is it starting in 2nd gear ?
if you drive it down the road can you manually shift it?
if it's been sitting, the governor may be hung.
if you can manually shift it and it seems to work normally, i'll tell you how to" unstick" the governor, without taking anything apart.

It does seem to shift fine between 1 and2. Starts slipping only in drive.

if it's slipping in 3rd only, it's an internal problem with the direct drum.
It slips in all gears if it is in drive. I can shift it from 1st to 2nd and it works fine in those 2 gears but fells like it is slipping when I shift up back into drive. What tranny could I put behind the 360 besides an auto? I would prefer a 5 speed or at least a 4 speed manual.

i just put a np435 out of a 89 ramcharger pedals switch right over, drill hole and mount clutch slave, works great, youll need a longer drive shaft though

Blow by! Its compression going into the bottom end and coming out of the dipstick. See it all the time, you will have a broke piston ring/rings,

Tranny issue:
An old mechanic told me to try putting posi diff additive in the tranny and see if it clears up. Worked with mine personally, it coats the clutches and such to work better.pretty amazing how well it cleared my trans up and worked like a charm

While possible, Jeff B gave a more likely problem and solution. I have a 85 with a 360, and I know for fact there are no problems with rings or pistons, and it will blow oil out of the dipstick if the pcv valve gets clogged.

As for the transmission, an a518/46rh will swap in, but you will need new driveshafts and some tcase mods. And to be honest, it's realy not worth the trouble just to get the overdrive. If you are set on getting rid of the 727, I would swap in a manual, but I prefer to row the gears anyway.
