8.8 question

I was told that my jeep has an 8.8 with a limited slip I've been told that the carriers are different on a ls and an open, is this true. Can I put something in a ls carrier with out having to pull it out like a mini spool? Or does that need to be put into an open carrier as well. I plan on either getting a spool or a mini spool but from what I can tell I can put a mini spool in with out pulling the carrier if so that's what I'm gonna do cause I don't have to the tools to reset the back lash and what not

It is my understanding that the weakest link on the 8.8 is the stock carrier (LS versions). You would be better with a full spool, however you mentioned tools budget concerns.

Also, I don't think a mini spool will work in the lsd version, the lock rite Aussie etc, definitely won't.

From what I've found you can't put a mini spool in a LSD carrier. To do a full spool you would need to install the c-clip eliminator kit. I had a detroit installed in mine and never looked back.

x2, a full case locker in the 8.8 is ideal

i don't think a lsd case will accept a locker

Also you can pull the carrier and put it back without having to reset it so long as you don't change any of the settings or washers or mess with the pinion.

You cannot put any type of locker in the 8.8 LSD. Either put an open carrier in it for your mini spool or pick up a much better quality unit locker wise.

If we can help with anything let me know.

If you break an axle you will have wished you had the C-clip eliminators. For the price of a Detroit you can probably buy the spool and the eliminators. Call down to East Coast Gear Supply and price it out.

i hadnt thought about that. i got on there website it looks to be about 50 bucks more to get the spool and c-clip eliminator over the detroit and i figured on doing the eliminator kit so i guess ill keep saving and go that route.

I agree. When I chose my 8.8 I hated that I went the the Ls carrier. I knew in the end that i would end up with the super 88 kit with spool so it didn't bother me much. Still a giant leap ahead of that turdy5 I had in it lol

I'm glad to learn the difference in these carriers. I have 2 friends about to swap in 8.8s. One already has a LS and says he's gonna weld it. Can he even do that?

I don't see why you wouldn't buy a open diff and put a $50 mini spool in it. I couldn't find a 4:10 LS when I was searching the junk yards. The mini spool was a bitch to put in, tho, they make that shit tight.

Yeah, I actually knew about that one but don't really consider it a viable option anymore since Powertrax (and Lockright) were sold and had been horrible to get a hold of while the new owners worked on removing the manufacturing from the US (SC to be exact) to taking it to China (or overseas).

Also, along with that the Powertrax has not been a decent choice in my mind from a service standpoint, they are a royal PITA to work on and have had a ton of issues due to their more complex design compared to the other lunch box lockers. Price is not that much below a full case locker either.

You are correct though, I should have mentioned that.

As for welding the LSD carrier.......probably more weak/PITA than it is worth. Welding the spiders still will have clutches on the outside between the spiders and the housing. Pick up an open carrier and weld it or put in a mini spool. Otherwise you are probably going to take out a lot more than the carrier when it explodes.

When replacing the carrier. Do you have to reset the gears ?
When you aren't replacing gears or touching the pinion, generally no. But there's a chance the open carrier could be machined a little different and change your backlash, and I assume there will be new bearings going on the carrier so they could change your setup from the preload being different. Just have to do it and check everything once it's back together. If you have good gears I'd bet it would fall back into spec...

The only thing you would have to check is the backlash. I would have a set of new carrier shims on hand to adjust that in case there is damage to the stock cast shims (there normally is) but otherwise it is pretty straight forward.

Yea my gears look to be in good shape. I will list likely hold off until I do the super 88 and full spool. I doubt il break anything in my 8.8 on 35's and my wheeling style.

This is pretty much what I lm going to do now. I still need to change my gear ratio but I'll have to hold off on that for now I guess

Ya $471 Dollars for an over complicated lunchbox locker that will likely break is not a viable option in my opinion either. I am not a fan of the No slips as they are ridiculously pricey and notoriously have issues.
Mini spools are designed to take c-clips, Full spools are not.
Technically you should be able to put a mini spool in a T/L case you would just have to shim it up in there as the internal case dimensions are different. I have never tried it but i don't see why it would not work. With that said If it is a stock OE set up that you dont want to take apart, then just weld it and save up to do a spool or lokcer and c-clip elim kit.

Not meaning to hi-jack, but....

Since we're talking about 8.8s....when I finally pick one up from a 97+ Explorer, narrow the long side, and get it under my S10, what would be a good traction aid? It'll have a 4.8 LS motor with a 67mm Holset pushing it (shooting for 600hp or so), so I want something that'll stay tight and boil both tires, but not have the oddities of my other trucks which have a Detroit and a Grizzly.

Not sure how tough the factory limited slips are, although I know you can make them tighter. I put an Auburn in a Chrysler 9.25 for a guy a while back with a healthy 360 and 35s and it held up very well.

Opinions?

For that HP I would recommend doing a real c-clip eliminator (not the bolt on one since you are cutting it down anyway), bigger shafts and a spool. You can try an aftermarket limited slip but not sure what is available as far as larger shaft spline counts for the 8.8. I bet Chase knows off the top of his head.
