8.8 welded, mini spool or full spool?

I've heard a number of different things about the 8.8 Ford carriers being weak or prone to breaking with a mini spool or when welded. Mine is the 31 spline and I'm only running 33's on a Ranger with a 4cyl. My budget is telling me to weld it but IDK. Any suggestions?

full spool requires c-clip eliminator kit. superior makes a sweet one and ill make you a great deal on a 8.8 spool i have had in stock for 4 months. but the spool thing gets quiet expensive.

Mini as said not recomended.

welding cheap and effective.

how about a lockrite?

How well does welding work if you plan to drive on the road every now and then. I have an 8.8 with limited slip and want to make it a little more predictable when playing oin the rocks. But I do drive it around town a good bit on nice days. Would welding be an option or should I go with a lockrite.

Not real familar with how the lockrite works so kind of flying blind at this. Sorry for trying to high jack your thread marvilusone

No problem. I'm not choosing to go with a locker due to I've wheeled with both spooled/welded rear and locked rears and my personal preference is the spool/welded. Mine will next to never see pavement so I'm not worried about street manners but I have DD'd other rigs with spool/welded rears. I just like them due to the fact it is 100% predictable, it will never unlock on you like a locker will.

Running a welded diff on a DD is not recommended. Like everything else, you can do it, but the street manners and accelerated tire wear make it a poor choice for a street driven rig.

LockRite operates by pushing the two gears together when driving in a straight line. When turning and the locker senses one wheel moving faster that the other, the springs release the gear mechanism so the tires can turn differentially :)

The lock rite sounds alot like the limited slip I already have, will it work better though. The limited slip worked well in the mud but on rocks it seemed to let me down. Will the lockrite be better then the limited slip on rocks? Enough to make it worth the 200-300 it will cost.
I plan to put one in the front becasue right now I am open in the front so any thing will be better then nothng but how about the rear?

Marvilusone - I'd weld it

Jds97wrangler - the lock right is what you're looking for. You will have good traction on the rocks unlike the limited slip but without the accelerated tire wear of a spool. It will do wonders for you up front also.

I haven't messed with an 8.8 in a while, but wouldn't he need to change out the carrier as well?
