I have heard that you can get a different type of insurance/registration for vehicles not used on the road.

I want to make my 4runner a trailered vehicle. What options do I have?

if it's not registered/licensed, you don't need it insured...

just turn in the plate, quit getting it inspected, and cancel the insurance...

then, it's a trailer-queen forever...

There won't be any issues with those road/trails at Uwharrie and Tellico?

Technically, yes - any official state "road" requires registration.
To be a good law-abiding citizen you will have to trailer to the trail head.

for the access roads, yes you need to be insured and taged. So legally from one trail head to the next, you will have to trailer it.My trail rig is road legal but it's old enough she doesn't get safety inspected any more.

Have you considered registration as a "farm vehicle"? May be feasible depending on the vehicle.

Yeah, I was looking into that.

I am just looking to save some money while keeping it legal enough to get it around the trails.

insure it as a recreational vehicle only. That is the way i insure evrything except my primary vehicle. You have to have at least one other vehicle insured other than the rec. vehicle. I think the maximum miles per year is 4k.

register it as if it were a regular vehicle. The only thing your trying to save money on is insurance. I don't know about NC, but SC you register it by the vin. The taxes suck but I don't know how to help you with that.
