81 scrambler tranny noise

my 81 scrambler SR4 transmission started making a bad noise today! in 1st and 2nd, it sounds like there is a chain rattling inside. i assume this is a bad thing! what's the best way to diagnose this issue?

Drain the oil and see what it looks like. I'm not 100% sure on that trans but you should be able to pull the top cover and look down inside it.
