Been looking at an FJ-60 that's for sale nearby, never owned a yota and esp don't have experience with the f-motor straight sixes.

Manual tranny, 180k mi, doesn't leak much, etc. Anything specific to look for in those? Any reason I'd want to stay away from it as a DD?

do you live in an area with lots of hills? 65mph on flat highways....55 on hills.

other than that, they are great trucks. They will tow anything...they just wont tow it fast. i had an 89FJ62 (automatic) and loved it. bit on the sucky side as far as fuel mileage goes. 180k is nothing for the motors, or trannys for that matter.

the only think i can think of that goes wrong is the actuators for the tcase, makes sure it works and the struts fro the rear hatch.

Yep, like b2 said. Gas milage not great. And you are not gonna do 80 in it. Emissions can be a problem, the vacum hoses for the emissions stuff looks like spagetti, if its gone, can get expensive to replace, (if you dont have an inspection guy)

Weber/Desmog/Header will wake it the F up though. (IF you have an inspection guy) Or a Jim C desmog carb/distributor, check IH8MUD.COM, ask over there, those guys are super knowledgeable.

I think actuators are only on FJ62s(?)

Sounds like a nice rig, I have grown to love the wagons recently, and I have parts for them all over my garage/shed/backyard...and about to get another one to part out.

Thanks for the responses, I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on it.

Not sweating the gas mileage, this one will mostly be a winter DD. In the mountains so I really never go over 60 or so anyways.

And I'm pretty sure I'm familiar with slow, I DD'd an '84 diesel mercedes for the last year.

Just a bit of body rust, couple of dents consistent with life in the mountains. Anything specific I should look for during the test drive?

Oh, biggest tars it'll stuff/push stock-ish? You know I won't be able to leave it alone...

well i'm sure you know that since it is an 82, there is no emission testing. as far as tires go, 31s are great stock, not much bigger or you'll kill the already unimpressive acceleration. check the inside of the front tires after a good drive and see if the knuckle is leaking. the gear oil will wash out the heavier grease in the hubs and birfields.

Still has to have OE emissions equip to pass safety, at least it did about 8-9 years ago when I had an Inspectors licence.

Pretty sure this is correct. We don't have an emissions check here in watauga but whatever emissions stuff the factory made is supposed to be on there for the safety check.

Inspection's not really a big worry anyways, I'm good to a local place and they're good to me.

well yea..as long as there is a tailpipe and somewhat of a muffler and it isn't billowing smoke, you'll be good. at least it was at the place i took my 81 in raleigh (jiffy lube i think)

31s will get ya anywhere ya need to go at URE. i had a blast there on 31s in my FJ62
