I'm looking at buying a "83 yota pick up with a service body. My wife thinks that its a bit much so wanted to see if anyone might be able to shed some light on this. I wish i had link to post to this but I don't as back home really doesn't believe in craigslist, gotta love the good ol newspaper. I talked with the owner and been going back and forth about it. Motor and tranny was rebuilt 7 mths ago and he put a service body on a month ago. He is asking $3500. What do you think?

Sorry maybe I'm dense - define "service body"?
$3500 implies it is in very good condition

I hope it's an aluminum service body, The weight of a steel one w tools and other crap might strain the 4 banger and make it a gas hog. Why is he sellin it if he just put a service body on it? Did he create a monster? or ruin the ride? It might have some handling/braking issues as well w a heavy rearend. I've had about 1000lbs in mine and it drove like a boat, swaying left and right while I sawed at the wheel. I was sure the front wheels came off the ground a time or 2 also

It is an aluminum body. The style that is normally found on work trucks that consist of 3-4 panels with doors for storage and a small bed area in the center. It was his dd and was doing work to it to give to his son, but according to him his son doesn't want it "an old truck". I am unable to look at it as I am currently forwarded deployed and my wife doesn't know much about trucks that much. My wife is going to be going back home for a vacation and is willing to look at the truck as long as I'm not completely mad about getting an older yota. from the few pictures that I have seen of it looks as a decent start but plenty of room for improvement.

I may be biased as I've had an 84 since 85 and will have it till I die :driver:. I'd ask if the body is welded onto the frame and have a mechanic check it out, It might be a great truck though the price seems a lil steep like Ratlab mentioned, and THANKYOU for your service SIR ! :usa::rockon:

Thank you for your support. I use to have an 88 when i first started driving and loved it until i left for the military. I'm going to have my wife make sure everything is good especially when she has her dad with her. He knows alot about vehicles not so much older trucks but he's really savvy about vehicles non the less. if everything checks out fine with it would you consider 2500 to be fair?

I think the solid front axle Toyotas 79-85 are better than the IFS ones and definately cheaper/easier to lift. If the motor/trannys rebuilt and it has a 5 speed and runs well it might be worth more than 2500. AC, newer tires, other parts etc, is it an Extracab ( mo money! ). They are pretty easy to work on and last and last if maintained well. They cost more than some old trucks cause lot's of peeps want them and they can be hard to find in good shape and I don't understand why junior does'nt want it ? (maybe it's too slow?) It's funny to me that some service parts cost less now than 20+ years ago.
