Okay, so I was wheeling the other night and as I was on my way home I noticed the charge warning light on my dash was on and my voltage was down a little bit from normal. I thought I toasted the alternator but now I am not sure b/c it has still been acting normal just with a little lower volts then usual. I searched to no avail what it could be any thoughts?

check the brushes and commutator. The brushes wear out eventually, they are available at the dealer. and a few places online.

my light popped on and off for few days then the alternator finnaly gave out.

go to advance and have them check it.

you're right, don't try and diagnose anything your self, maybe save a few bucks along the way,

go directly to the place that will tell you anything you want to hear, as long as it ends with you parting with your cash !

Good choice !!

hehe

Were you wheeling in mud or water??? If so you may have the alt packed full of crap. Hose it out good and spray it down w/ wd40 and see if it helps. Had the same type of thing happen to me on my XJ a few times.

Yea advance and autozone's tester will tell you it's putting out 14 volts, but when you put it on the truck it doesn't put out any amps! Good luck findinga new one that works. Here's a hint. Don't hook up the bottom radiator hose and put coolant in it till you get a good one. Saves the time of draining the cooling system 4-5 times. Ask me how I know.

what are you talking about?? lol

My dumb ass going "This one will work for sure. How many bad ones could ther be from 3 different parts houses" (All with different names.)

+1 on putting a voltage meter on it. Start it, and check the voltage. Turn on all electrical components and see what it puts out.

Is the Brake and Charge light flashing on the dash?

Did you check the fuses under the hood? Facing the truck, you will see a fuse box on the left that's shaped like an "L". Open it and look at the big fuses.........

It very could be your Regulator.

I was having all kinds of charging issues, and I just did away with all of that old wiring. I had a bracket build by www.budbuilt.com to fit a chevy 1 wire (internally regulated) and my problems are fixed.
