I have a running 4runner project and had a question about the exhaust.

the truck and computer is 1985 but the engine is more of a 90's style 22re. intake and wiring is all from an 85.

I need to change my exhaust. I have a header but it wont connect to my piece with the oxygen sensor. did the 85 have an oxygen sensor? do I need it anyways?

If it is fuel injected, yes you need the O2 sensor. Otherwise the computer doesn't know how much fuel to dump.
Technically, yes - but if you aren't real concerned about fuel economy or ideal power... then it will run ok without it.

I, ahem, may or may not have a '93 where the O2 bung-hole (heehee) rusted out so the sensor literally fell out... probably a year ago... runs fine... just have to ignore the CEL...

But more to the point, if I understand right you could just get a replacement connecting pipe w/ the 02 bung in it to attach to the header at the base. It may not be exactly the original location but it's close enough.
