'87 Jeep Wrangler Help?

I have an '87 Jeep Wrangler, V6. Some restorations were done to it before I got it. Anyway, my engine has resently blown up and I want to know if anyone else knows what is compatible to a Jeep Wrangler V6, that may be cheaper, and will be worth it. the wranglers don't have "v-6's", they have inline 6's.... but anyways, yours is a 4.2L, ditch that and swap in a newer 4.0L, they are great motors and pretty dependable if taken care of.
 
Or, this would be a good time for a V-8 swap. Tranny also, if it's a manual, 'cause the BA10 is junk.
 
IF it indeed it does actually have a V6 it was swapped in, you might as well try to figure out what it is and go from there.

Now if you have Wrangler and Cherokee confused, some of those did come with V6's.
