I have a coolant leak I've been trying to track down on a 22re.

You can smell the antifreeze but don't see drips under the vehicle. I got to looking harder yesterday and found antifreeze under the intake. Looks like I will need to take the intake off to see where the leak is coming from. Any thoughts on where the coolant could be leaking from under the intake? Anybody know where to find a cooling system/ hose diagram?

www.ncttora.com has a downloadable FSM. The thermostat body is on the lower intake and has a couple smaller lines coming from it. It isnt hard to get to if you unplug all of the vac lines from the throttle body. You wont need to pull the whole intake if you do go that route. The upper bolts to the lower. If you do take the whole thing off, there is a "hidden" allen head bolt that is close to the thermostat body. Hope this helps.

there is a coolant tube bottom middle of the lower intake, this is sealed by an 'O'ring and they do rot over time.

also could be a freeze plug corroded, if original it's 23years old, not unheard of at all.

also a cast steel plate on the back of the head for EGR passage, plate seals back of head, the gasket is graphite composite, and they degrade over time causing coolant leaks

head gaskets leaking externally on original engine are not un-heard of either

a few places to look
