i have found and 88 4runner cheap. it has spun a bearing and needs rebuilt/replaced. it is the efi and 5speed. my question is, if i get it, how much is it to fix, whats better, rebuild or replace, does anyone know or have one to replace with, or does anyone do it and tell me how much it will cost to get her running again. ive always wanted one of these and i found it for 400.00 in great shape minus the engine. is it worth it? whats it worth after fixing? thanks for the responses in advance.

If it's the black one on craigs list it's a 3.0 liter. You're better off to replace.

Hard to tell if it's worth it or not. At 350k the top end in that engine is ready to go if it hasn't been replaced. Typically they go around 225k. I looked up the labor to replace the rod bearings and it said about 6-8 hours for a skilled tech. Just drop the pan and replace bearings. If it's a main bearing you have to pull the engine. Between 17 and 24 hours for a skilled tech. And if you're pulling the engine you might as well rebuild the whole thing or replace it. If that was a 22re I'd tell you to go for it without hesitation. It looks like it's in half way decent shape otherwise, maybe a good candidate for a 350 swap. Not too sure if the IFS could take that though. It could be a cool project if you were willing to take it on though. If I had the money and a place to do it I might buy it and cram a 4bt Cummins in it do a SAS and kill me some zombies with it!

lol..i like the idea but i just need a little truck to drive around in when i feel like it and my son to drive to work (when he finds a job) other wise it will sit.
