Just bought '88 4Runner, runs great but doesn't start. No click when turn key, only after hitting clutch bypass switch but still doesn't start (have to roll start it). Guessing need new starter, my boy can get one wholesale for $120 but I heard they're tricky to install on V6 1st gens. Advice, recommendations? Also need some easy/medium trails to hit in Orange or Chatham counties. Holler,

Only click I get is after turning key AND hitting clutch bypass. Electrical seems perfect otherwise. Won't crank at all. I can get to Durham if you want to take a look at it.

ya you can bring it to me just give me a shout, the starter itself if it is clicking probably is good it just needs contacts much cheaper than a starter, and a advance auto or autzone starter are shit so don't put one on, you will be sorry. a toyota starter is tough as nails they just need to be serviced every 10 years or so.

It also sounds like your clutch switch is broken of kicked out of position. (This switch tells the computer that you have the clutch pressed in and will allow the starter to enguage.) (The clutch start cancel button does the same thing but will get old pressing it every time.)

Got a new battery, noticed the connector wire is small gauge and runs hot, so I need ot replace that and starter should work. Gotten it to crank a couple of times but roll starting is the norm.
