88 Chevy Hard Shifting After Installing New Starter

As the title says, I recently put in a new starter and now the truck is having trouble shifting into second gear. It revs really high and then shifts with a very noticeable jolt. I am not mechanically inclined in any way and don't really see how I could have messed up the transmission by swapping out a starter.

I did read that sometimes disconecting the battery cable can reset a cars computer and it has to relearn some things, shifting being one of them. This was for a newer car though. Could the same thing be affecting my 1988 Suburban?

Any help or insight would be very much appreciated.

if you have a 700r4 trans your tv cable (shift cable) is bad or needs adjusting.this cable runs from throttle linkage to trans.from what i have heard this is what controls the 700r4,no electrical involved.you will have to google how to adjust or pull out the hanes book.they can explain better than me.its pretty easy to adjust or replace.hope this helps.if this doesnt work then your SOL

If it's a TH400, check the vacuum line going to the trans. It does sorta the same thing as the TV cable on a 700R4. If you kinked/cracked/unhooked it, etc, it'll shift like you're describing.

If its a th350 check your vac lines also and look to see if fluid in in the lines closest to the trans if so need new trans modular thingy...

I have a 700r4 trans and I think the cable was sticking. I didn't even get around to adjusting the cable, just fiddled with it at the TBI and now it shifts as smooth as ever. Hopefully that's all it was and not something more serious. Kinda weird if you ask me. I may order a spare just in case something is wrong with it. Thanks for all of the advice guys, I really do appreciate it.

Id replace it man... 700's are known for overheating when the tv cable starts going out can cause fire and all kinds of problems for ya! just my thought!
