Looking for some MJ specific help here. I have an 88 that the column was sloppy on. Well I tore it down and tightened the annoying bolts in it. When I put it back together shortly after the ignition quit moving freely. So I tore back into it and found the rod bent. I pulled a column out of a parts xj and the rod is completely different. Is it possible I basically bent the rod straight? Anyone have a column out that can post pictures of how the rod goes in the switch and how the switch mounts on the column?

Would the rod be the same on a non-tilt column? I have one of those in the garage that I can snap after work

I dont think so. Is the column out of an MJ? If it is can you post a picture of how the switch and dimmer mount?

Actually no, it's slated to go in an MJ but came from an XJ. The MJ currently has a tilt column with all the plastic broken off from trying to access the bolts you were tightening, so it might be easy to get a look at that one.

Well if you can get pictures of the MJ column that would be great. I know they are different in the sense that they are column shift and the xj is floor. Trying to determine if the ignition and dimmer switch mount differently or if I just basically straightened the rod.

I’ve never actually been in an MJ, but I have a hard time believing its MJ specific. The XJ steering column from 1994 and earlier are pure GM. Google GM tilt column fix, you’ll find those pesky 4bolts come loose all the time since the 70s.

Now I actually have an 84XJ Project in my driveway. I rebuilt the column to swap in a key cylinder, it didn’t back together right, maybe it was that fooking rod. Dunno, it was a couple years ago and I still haven’t tore back into it

The MJ column is different than all xj columns in that they are column shift. There is a shift cable that connects to the bottom of the column that shifts the auto from p to drive.

I see. Column shift can be found from Chevy to Cadillac and everything in between. My point was really that if you’re searching for used parts, don’t limit yourself to MJ when we know Jeep used GM columns til 1994.

Very true but from my research it also notes that Saginaw made 15 different rods.... Actuator Rod01 Ignition Actuator | Steering Column Services I just bent this one back to what I think it should be bent like......
