I recently got a 1988 s10 blazer. When I put it in 4wd I can't get it out without major grinding unless I turn off the ignition. Is this a vaccum problem? Also it will not even go into 4lo unless I turn off the ignition and force it down. The range selector doesn't move either (if I'm in 4hi it still says 2wd) but that's not a major issue. I'm unsure of the t-case since I haven't really had time to study up on it. So any help will be greatly appreciated.

Electrically shifted, or manual? Should be an NP231, but crawl under there and read the small (silver dollar-sized) aluminum ID tag.

If it's manual, then there are no vacuum actuations of any sort. Sounds a bit like your synchro's are done, and it's prolly about time for a rebuild, or replace. (Cheaper to replace with a junkyard/friend's case, but you may not end up any better).

I had a 231c in my Blazer for a long time, and they're finicky. I always got it to shift into 4LO easiest by rolling, throwing the trans in N, and jamming the t-case into LO...you gotta roll less than 5 mph though.

I've read Jeep guys need to shut off the ignition to shift sometimes too, even straight from the factory.

Rebuild kits are about $150, and it's not too intense if you've got any mechanical skills.

I had one of these. i know it is common for the little light part on the selector will stick. Mine said I was in 4wd drive all the time. I know that you be able to go from 2wd to 4wd hi as you are going. Do not stop, but try to do it at slow speeds. I know when I wanted to get into low I needed to have the vehicle in neurtal for it to shift into it and it made a little grind sound but it is quick, and I think it had something to do with the rpms of the engine was high, but you have to be stoped to go in and out of 4wd low.
