I need to remove the front knuckles so i can replace the ball joints on the stock dana 30. How hard is this? do i need to pull the axles and do the axles have c-clips?

I really just need to replace the SCREWED in caster/camber bushing.

Any idea or help would be great.

thanks:beer:

I'll be watching this thread, I might be changing my ball joints soon.

On my XJ D30, I've replaced the front unit bearings, its not that hard to get that far. I think I left the shafts in though. My CJ D30 doesnt have any C-clips, I'm pretty sure all (most?) D30s do not use c-clips.

Now as far as caster/camber bushings...why? I'm pretty sure the stock setup is a circular insert. The factory has a little adjustment for caster by shimming the LCAs.

c/c bushings

The factory adjustment bushing is screwed in, the new bushing is also a screwed, it's a sleeve with the bushing sliding into the sleeve.

is the bushing eccentric? I havent got that far in my XJ, but on my CJ D30, everything in the balljoints was concentric. the screw-in bushings adjust the preload on the balljoints. If they are ececntric, they also adjust cast/camber.

not really sure what is what just know the basic. I ordered a 1/4 and a 1/2 degree for now. The biggest problem with front end shops is getting the factory screwed in bushing out. So i'm going to replace with the new screwed in sleeve and offset bushing. The bushing is easy to adjust or replace if needed for the front end alingment.

WebSite

Man that is a great site, THANKS!!

I have replaced my ball joints in my xj D30 before, and let me tell you do not attempt without a decent press. I had the habor freight press and broke it twice on one side. You need a good press and the right adapters.
