My son's 88 Cherokee XJ has 4L but when he shifts to 4H he has nothing. Any help?

Thanks

4lo works and no 4 hi I cannot see how that is possible seeing how the mode fork needs to move and engage to lock the front and rear shaft together and when shifted into for low just slides the hub into the low range planetary. I have a 231 apart on my bench here at my job.

I'm thinking it's a linkage problem (adjustment?). What do you think?

88 XJ Dana 30 Question

Is there any way to remove the Vac Motor and install a one piece axle the the hub to center section?

Thanks

Unless you are hearing some major noise from the inside of the case I would think it's in the linkage. Like rob said, hard to see how it would be in the mode shift mech inside. My 242 in the XJ was a little funky sometimes before I did the krawl box swap.

Yes, you can install the one piece axle shaft and do away with the vac disconnect.

Vac. Motor bye-bye

Do you have any other info on removing the Vac. Motor? Hve you seen and other fourms?

Thanks

I would have to agree that it is probably in the linkage as well.
As for the removal of the vacum actuator, there are numerous write up on making them or you can purchase the kits from http://www.4x4posi-lok.com/app_jeep.html

Thanks for the link. So i guess when the transfer case is locked into 4L/4H only the drivers side wheel turns? What tells the vac. motor to lock in the other wheel. I'm new to this Jeep thing.

Thanks:beer:

On top of the Tcase is ball switch with 4 hoses connected, When the Tcase is shifted into 4wd, it activates the switch and sends vacum to the front axle which moves the fork to lock the front.

Last Dana 30 Question

Is this vacum actuator on all Cherokee D30's? If not what year did the stop?

Thanks

The driver's side wheel won't turn unless you have a limited slip/locker in the front. The power will take the path of least resistance and the half shaft running into the vacuum collar will spin.
When the collar engages, you will get one of the two front wheels helping. Again, it will be the one with the LEAST traction.
Sucks, huh. Well that's why they make lockers...

late 91 and later XJ's with auto transmissions not sure when they stopped it on the manuals I think 94.

Hey JC did you have any problems with your 231/231 krawl box? I asking cause I've been thinking of getting a Box 4 Rocks from Mad Rooster or D & D Machine but was going to find a Dana 300 flip and twin stick it. That's the reason I have a 231 in peices under my bench at work.

No 4H??

Part 2-

I had all 4 wheels off the ground last night changing tires. laying under the truck it looks and sounds like the transfer case shifts into 4L and 4H. When IN 4L/4H the front driveshaft will turn but neither fron wheel will turn, is that right? I unpluged the vac line from the vac motor and heard vac release if that means anything. We are heading to OBX in July and would like to have it fixed by then (haha).

We are thing about getting a Lock Right for the front and Posi-Lock cable system also, what do you all thing?

Thanks
