I have an 89 Jeep XJ and the whole steering column is loose and it feels like it is about to fall off. Any pointers on how to fix it?:driver:

is it a tilt column? Mine about fell off, I just replaced the entire column. From what I read, its pretty tricky to rebuild. There is a pin that rattle loose.

that and there are four bolts that back off. its not just XJ's. Dodge Dakotas have the same issue. There is a fix it guide.

I don't think its worth the aggravation. Save the ign cylinder out of your column and stick it in another, to keep your locks matching.

If it's a tilt it is most likely the 4 reverse torx bolts Waaay down inside of the column. I just recently took my Comanche tilt column apart to locktite and tighten those pesky little bolts. It's a challenging but doable project. Just allow your self plenty of time so you don't get rushed and screw something up.
I had to make a little slide hammer to pull the two tilt pivot pins and borrow a 1/4" drive E-8 socket to get to the for bolts in question and a column lock plate removal tool from Advance Auto.

Check Here and Here for pretty good write ups on column repair.
