I installed a new flywheel and clutch in my 89 YJ (a 4.2L). I was getting a grind on the start. I changed my starter (i got it warrantied by Advance, no $ out of pocket). I'm still getting the grind but not as bad as before.

Does anybody know what is causing this? I keep getting asked if my starter is supposed to be shimmed. It hasn't been for the last 6 or 7 years. I had this problem YEARS ago and it was when the starter was a little loose. That's definitely not the problem now.

man I wish I could help you, I have a very similar case. I swapped my tranny and now have the same deal. I am 99% sure the all the input shaft dimensions were the same, same flywheel, I think I used a different bellhsg. I suspect something is up with my bellhousing. My plan is to pull the tranny and get under there to see if I can look at the starter/flywheel interface with both bells and see if they're different. Hopefully they are and my new bellhsg will cure my problems.
I've been going to NAPA and cashing in on the lifetime warranty...I think I've been pushing it there too much.
