90 xj no OD

My xj has quit going into OD. I had this problem about a month ago but before I could fix it it began working again. Where do I start looking?
 
what is the production date?
if it's before 9/90 the first thing you need to check is the e-17 ground splice (i can send you the info)
this trans is common for the snap ring jumping out of the od clutches, due to the wide snap ring and shallow groove.
do not touch the cable that goes to the trans, it is not a kickdown cable, it is a throttle pressure cable and shouldn't need to be adjusted unless you have recently adjusted it, the put it back where it was.
 
I'll check things tomorrow. I noticed a bad Vac line when it happened the first time and did a road side fix but never followed up. The Vac line is on pass side and has one end on a heater hose valve of some kind. I'll check man date tomorrow.

The ground issue sounds like a good start. PO had a stereo system in but removed upon sale. There is a lot of feed back in my FD pager while driving. At the moment I have no radio in the jeep.
 
8/89 is the mtg date. At present it is acting right. Y does this problem come and go?
 
Still happening. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. Someone give me a GOOD suggestions.
 
I have the fan on toggle switch. Are u talking about the switch that the guage reads from.

that one is in the t-stat hsg or rear of cylinder head. He is probably talking about the one in the side of engine block (drivers side fwd), it does something more important.

CAUTION: A high input impedance digital volt-ohm meter (DVOM) is required when testing sensors on these vehicles. A low input impedance meter could seriously damage certain components of this system.

Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor electrical connector, and check the resistance across its two terminals. The resistance should be less than 1,000 ohms when the engine is at normal operating temperature. See the following resistance chart to verify that the coolant temperature sensor is within its range.

Ok, i see the temp switch and I'm reading about the brake switch, nuetral safety switch and can't decide which to try. Leaning toward the temp switch cause that comes from the trans man!
 
take a volt meter and check it first. there are a bunch of things it can be, you can't just replace shit until it's fixed. it only takes a few minutes to check, consider it saving money.
why is the fan on a toggle switch?
is it a factory electric fan or an aftermarket setup?
if it is a factory setup, the temp sensor may be the reason the pcm isn't commanding it on. (if that's why it's on a toggle)
