I have found a 91 4-runner with the 3.0 v-6, the owner says it needs a head gasket.. how big of a deal is it to replace on one of these engines?

He is asking 550.00, so ofcourse it sparked my interest.

it is a royal, royal pain. Engine is tucked in very tight! The HG like to let go in these pretty often, and with high miles like the throw rods. If its in good shape otherwise, I'd replace the 3.0 w/ a toy 3.4 or GM 4.3. You'll end up w/ a little more money in it, but won't have to do it twice.

Yea, for $550 I'd put a toy 3.4 in it. Well, or a 7MGTE out of a supra, but that's a lot more work.

See if you can get the vin off of it, then call your local dealer and ask if the VO6 recall is still open on it. If so you can at least get the gaskets replaced and I have seen several engines put in. If its already done then think about swapiing in the 3.4.

Yo,
I have fixed lots of engines over the years and I will tell you the 3.0 is a MF to work on...... The crossover rear exhaust pipe is really tough. Best do a valve job while heads are off because the exhaust valves really take a beating. You can expect to spend 3-4 weekends doing tear down and build up. And, that little manifold in the rear with all those sensors and connections, GD the SOB that put that thing there....the engine is unforgiving.

Pack a lunch if Toyota refuses to do the recall work...

I kind of like them but i am a glutton for punishment, crossover pipe isn't bad from the bottom side to get to, leave the manifolds on when pulling the head, coolant housing w/ all the sensors isn't bad to get to when the upper manifolds is off it some kind of biatch when it is on. when yo pull the upper if your worried about the vac lines tape the three together that get straight vacuum and # the other three that go to EGR ect. the other 2 are self explantory as well as 2 ps hoses, and the 2 secondary air hoses diff. sizes. disconnect fuel line down out frame rail when pulling lower manifold leave injectors alone. don't try to take the fuel line loose at the fuel rail you will break the VSV for the char canister. there is a large secondary air hose that runs from a pipe under the upper manifold that i usually ory up on as i pull it it can get stuck on there retty good, when putting it back put some vasoliene on the hose to make it slide down. you'll thanks yourself and so will the next guy pulling it.als o pull the whole air box and air tube 3 12mm and the hose clamp at the throttlebody and put it a side makes eveything seem much more roomy. Rebuilding the heads is a given if your pulling them. Better Listen to the motor very carefully and make sure there is no bearing noise otherwise pulling the motor and rebuilding it is really the only option. oh ya make sure you have long needle nose pliers in the 45 and 90 degree range there some clamps that suck if you don't have those.
