I just noticed today that my rear axle has a very slow leak...like it has greasy stuff on the outside but isn't leaving a puddle and it doesn't look wet...

I figure if I'm opening it...a locker would be something nice to do while I'm in there.

So...I need something cheap to put in there before I seal it back up

The 8.8 diff has 10 bolts and 2 notches at the bottom. As said above, you probably have an 8.8 if someone hasn't swapped something else in there. Here's a pic of my old 8.8 for reference...

I've heard welding is cheaper...WAY CHEAPER...
But if I don't like it, I can't reverse it.
OK, but I don't think that's a good option for something that sees the street more than the trail.

Where's it leaking? Cover, or pinion?

Your only real options for lockers are Detroit and ARB. Stick a lunchbox locker in that 8.8, and you're asking to break the carrier. Same goes for welding.

Or just sell it and buy a better platform for wheeling.

Leaking at the cover...

You guys are right...this thing is more my snow driving and yard mowing vehicle...but it isn't a daily driver.

I can't afford a better rig...just trying to get a little bit of fun out of a spare vehicle...

This is in Iwanna...what would be a reasonable offer?

1985 Ford 8.8 rear with 4:56 Richmond and Auburn posi unit. 5 lug, out of Ford Bronco full size. Make reasonable offer.

Assuming the brakes, gears and posi are in good shape and the axle isn't rusted to crap, I'd say $200-250.

I think I'll just let it go till it is wet on the outside...then just get a new gasket for the cover.

I'll check the fluid level in it before I drive again...to be safe

Look around in the average parking lot and 75% of the trucks you will see have a rear diff that looks "wet". Keep it full and replace the gasket if you feel like it. Like the saying goes," If it ain't leaking, it's empty".
