I searched but couldn't really find what I'm looking for.

Should I run into any issues if I swap my son's 91 4.0 xj engine (shot) auto tranny for a 98 TJ 4.0 stroker manual tranny?

Thanks, pwhit

I can't speak to the flexplate/flywheel swap, not sure if that is 100% bolt up.
You are also talking about putting a non-OBDII engine into an OBDII rig. There might be issues there, especially if you want to pass NC inspection.
I just swapped a 95XJ 4.0L into my 91XJ. I found 3 sensors that used different connectors. CPS on the bellhousing, coolant temp at the rear of the head and oil pressure sender above the oil filter. All 3 were interchangeable between engines, I just wish I swapped sensors while the engines were out

Thanks...from what I've read I believe 91-97 used pretty much the same engine (righ?). I'm just looking for a decent motor (less than 100k) for a decent price to swap in for my son's 1st car.

Guess I'll keep looking.

Thanks.

Anyone else....I'm seeing some conflicting info and feel kinda lost. Just wanting to make sure what will work and what wont.

Thanks

It will bolt up, but you may need to change the intake and exhaust manifold and maybe change out the accessory brackets. Just swap them over and anything that looks different. If you are staying with the same transmission, swap the flywheel/flexplate off the motor that comes out to the motor that is going in. But yes it will work. Don't forget to remove the Crankshaft Position sensor before pulling the engine!
