A buddy of my brother has a '99 WJ. Motor died on him and he found a 4.0 out of a '92 XJ.

As far as I know they changed some of the casting on the block in '95-96. And some head changes, but that was internal flow stuff.

Can he drop the '92 straight in? Or are there bigger differences?

If he can swap the 99 stuff to the 92 block I think he'll be ok.

Sent while I should have been doing something constructive...

Its not a direct bolt in, the head will have a 1/8'' provision for the coolant temp sensor in the left rear of the head near the firewall(Plug it). The front drive including the timing cover is different than the later versions and use the 99 and newer curved intake setup. The 99 distributor must be utilized, It can work if you want to fabricate but in the end its better to just get the correct era motor 96-99 with an 0630 head. Watch out for 99 and newer WJ blocks, the motor mounts are different and will not fit in an XJ or TJ.
