I have a 93 I6 XJ, with about 100K on it. i changed the oil about 100 miles ago, and when i let it run in the driveway, i had a very small oil stain right under the oil filter.

So i get under and feel around the filter and it is snug and is not leaking. However, the connection running to the starter is slick with oil, and there is oil smeared around the starter and some of the other components in that area.

Main seal leak?

Also, when i am sitting in idle or park and the engine is running, i have recently started hearing a low rattle more like some beans rolling in a can. I got under there again and it seems to be coming directly from the bottom of the engine. just inside the oil pan.

Any ideas what this might be? I have read on NAXJA that this could be the oil pump shaking loose and bumping the pan.

Whats your thoughts? Also, anyone do the rear main seal replacement in a XJ before?

How much of pain is it?

thx

haha I figured out your problem.... Its a jeep... but really I would be interested in know those problems too.... I have the same problem. When you fix yours you can come do mine too:rolleyes:

i dont know anything about the noises, but i changed the rear main on the MJ and it was cake, done easily in an aftenoon, it is a two piece seal, so all you have to do is drop the pan and replace the seal

thiswould be the perfect time to check if the pump is loose since youve heard that could be a problem
