93 toy 22re manifold glows

I have a 1993 toyota 22re 5spd. It lacks power (even for a 22re) and gets the manifold to a nice glowing red. Towing gets it almost transparent. Going to check the obvious timing and look for vacum leaks. Any common issues to look for? This thing gets hot enough that the bolts back out of the head pipe...

It sounds lean to me. Have you changed injectors. Im not very fluent with yota's you also may wanna check the catalytic converter and make sure its not stopped up, if it even has one. I think Alex at Carolina Truggies knows toyotas pretty well he can probably help you with it.

sounds either too lean, or timing way retarded... Id check the timing first...

if it has a cat. it may be stoped up

Timing would be my first guess....if there are any cam swaps or exhaust changes it could effect the AFM and the air/fuel but that sounds doubtful....exhaust being clogged is a possibility but again timing is where id start

Are all cylinders firing?

I've seen later models with a weak/dead coil pack. At idle it ran rough, while on the gas it seemed as if the engine would be OK, but the unburned fuel/air was burning off in the exhaust manifold and pre cat. It was glowing red and smelled terrible.
