Hello,
I just picked up a 94GC limited with the 5.2 AWD. I have two ?'s if anyone can advise.
First ?-When I got it there was no clicking from the drivers side CV. I couldn't resist taking it across the river and up a new logging road nearby. When I came off the mountain I sloshed the mud/dirt off the tires by backing up and going forward a few times in CV deep water. After this short trip it is now clicking at CV joint. I did a bunch of searching and figured I had a bad Viscous coupler in the TC because of the clicking and hopping.
I noticed today that both CV boots were split all the way round. I decided to spray some liquid wrench in there and now it has no clicking or hop. Long story short-should I just ad new boot kits and grease or buy new half shafts?

Next ? I have the VIC info center being a limited model. It keeps telling me to check the 4WD switch and chiming. I checked the TC switch on top of the 249 and it's clean and looks good. Any help would be appreciated on eiither question.

Thanks, Dan

Get a set of axle shafts from a 4.0 Zj that have u joints instead of cv joints.

As for the t case swap in a 242 or 231.

or TJ/XJ shafts, same parts. I think TJ's always had the bigger 297 U-joints, as did the ABS XJ shafts. All XJs after around 97 had the bigger U-joints too

Like most, things are kinda tight for me these days. As long as the TC works then I will keep it til I have to swap in another. I'm pretty handy with vehicles but don't have any experience with suspension or half shafts...

Can I swap to the U-joint set up and keep the 249 AWD TC?

Thanks for the replies and any further help.

Yes

I decided since the boots were trashed and cv's were wore to replace both half shafts. New shafts are now installed and cv's are not clicking but they are making binding sounds on sharp turns and tires are skipping on very tight turn

Should I now assume that VC is showing it's bad now that there is less slop with new cv's?

OR should I consider that the bearings are now showing there wear with new track bar, half shafts, freshly greased ball joints, tie rods......

While re-alligning front end today the tech did rotate tires while on rack and check looseness side to side if that helps with diagnosis. I think I also hear a hum at the front end but could be the newer AT tires?

Thanks for any help

I don't know much about this AWD, but it sounds like the VC isnt 'slipping' or whatever it does...like its in 4x4 in a typical transfer case. This can't be good for the new CV joints.

Thanks for the reply. It's like a limited slip for awd cherokees on the transfer case. It was skipping when I had the old cv's but quit hopping/clicking when I sprayed cv's with some liquid wrench. Now that they are new it is hopping again but not clicking. Come to think of it when I left the shop where the new axles were installed there was a squeaking noise at the front end when turning that quickly went away. It sounded like brake squealers for a few minutes. Do bearings squeal/squeak?

Swap in a 242

you must know input shaft length on tc,and if it needs to be swapped(i had to do this on mine) they have different angles on the gears depending on the manufacture date. can't remember the specifics, but all the info is online.

For now I'm trying to stick with the awd 249. I read that when VC is working it's the stronger transmission. I also don't have the time to do a swap with my job. 300.00 is a lot for a new coupler but is an easier fix.
Today I took it to a large parking lot and did figure 8's. The front is not hopping. The only noise from the front is the sound of the power steering binding from being to it's max.
The back tires makes a chirp every rotation if I have the wheel pinned to one side. I did it again while raining and there is no chirp from the rear
I thought if the VC was bad or going bad that the front would be hopping/chirping instead of the rear?
