94 Toyota Pickup sprung a leak, questions about replacing the motor

I bought a 94 Toyota pickup with a 22re about a year ago. It has 270,000 miles and I don't know the truck's history. It recently sprung a oil leak that is pretty significant. I dropped the truck off with a mechanic I know. He quoted $1500 labor and the interwebs quotes about $2000 for a new motor (not rebuilt).

So now comes the question. For those that don't know me, I barely understand the difference between blinker fluid and transmission fluid. Should I try and tackle the motor swap on my own, in my driveway, in PA? If everything went right, how many hours would it take an unskilled mechanic to swap a 22re?

If I do a motor swap, any reliable, performance related considerations I should make?

Where's it leaking? If you're considering replacing the motor yourself, consider tackling the leak fix yourself first?

I should have also said, the mechanic that looked at it said "this motor isn't doing well, there's a lot of knocking on cranking and in general it sounds really unwell."
Ok. I wouldn't want to do anything in a driveway in PA with winter approaching, but a 22re swap is fairly simple.

Is that $2000 for a short block, long block, or turn key? I'd go for a long block. You'll have to swap over you exhaust, intake, accessories.
