Dad has a 94 Wrangler that is in need of a trans, It is making a lot of noise and kicking out of gear.
What trans is it? been told AX-4 and AX-5, also it was only used in 94-95.. Is that true?
Whats a good place to look?
Its a 94 wrangler 4 cyl with 5 speed......
Thanks
Jon

Well I don't know why they told you that. The 5 speed behind the 4 popper was the same from when it came out in the xj till it was replaced by chrysler in the 90's. There are some t-5's in xj's but I have never seen one. I doubt it will be had to find at all. You are refering to a 94 wrangler yj with the 2.5L right?

2.5L and AX5 was what came in the Jeep

94 tranny issues

I have a 94 4 banger also - replaced the clutch this winter and now having tranny issues - 1st-3rd is roaring and can not get it to go into reverse - took everything apart again to make sure of shifter install, fluids, etc - everything is fine - except tranny has gone semi south on me...

Question - I can do most mechanics on the Jeep but will not even consider diving into a transmission rebuild - so - can parts be found for these Peugot AX/5's and who does this type of work...

My plans are to sell it this fall - 2nd owner since 94 and it sits inside - zero rust anywhere - so it is a great Jeep but I don't want to go too crazy on the $$ and not recover it in a few months......

Any and all help will be appreciated.

That is not a Peugot transmision. It is an Asian Warner transmision. They are fairly easy to find in good shape on ebay or from someone upgrading there xj or yj. It is an AX-5 and is plauged by the brass synchro's that the AX-15 has. If you put GL-5 in it it will eventually die. Just drop what you got and put a new/used unit in. Rebuilt units can be found for arround $750-$800.

Many thanks

I am an old CJ5 guy and this off brand stuff has thrown me a loop - been a great unit til now and when it died I never realized how obscure some of these main items are to locate.

I have been on ebay for cpl of weeks now and seems to be as much confusion there with what people have and what it will fit as anywhere - the reason why I postd this question here.

I appreciate this info and can push on now with the correct questions.

Many thanks.........

not asian warner, aisin warner, these trannys were made by a company owned by toyota. Same company that makes the toyota manual hubs, as well as many other parts. (Aisin is the ac-delco of toyota). The Main case and inner parts of the tranny are very similar with the same year toyota transmission, for the same coice either six cylinder, or four cylinder. The differences in the transmissions are in the input shaft, bellhousing, output shaft, and tailshaft/rear housing.

For example, lets say you wanted to run dual toyota cases in your jeep, and are going w/ pass. drop front axle, and for whatever reason do not want to run a Dana 300.....

Take the toyota rear housing and output shaft, and install in you jeep tranny, and bolt on the toyota t-case(s)

Same works if you want to swap a jeep motor in your toyota, just swap input shafts and bellhousings.

Parts are not hard to find, just pick up a quadratec book, and in there shows and exploded view of all parts and all parts are available.

Gotch

Great info - I have found a company up in Mass on ebay that rebuilds Jeeps and has a tranny in good shape with low miles - they have a good feedback rating and fire answers back quick. They seem reputable.

This isn't an extreme off road vehicle - jsut a daily driver with 4" lift and the tires and so on.

I'm 51 and having knee problems now and just cant get up and in without a lot of effort and pain - that's the reason why I am going to sell it this fall - and I have been going through it making sure it is mech sound before I sell. If you know anyone interested in a zero rust - sits inside - original paint 94 2 owner - with 145K miles - let me know - I really want it to go to someone who will appreciate it.

No clue why I had zero tranny noise and issues before I replaced the clutch - but it went south after maybe 1000 miles........
