what causes 95 jeep wrangler 2.5 to lose power and back fire. distributor is good.

Is the timing right?
cap/rotor good, not cracked,
wires/plugs ok?

ive checked the dist. cap and rotor, changed the plugs, put a new coil on, ensured intake manifold was tight, im really just lost at this point

I have had engines pop and spit with low fuel pressure. would be a starting point.

I just finished fighting this with my 2.5. Did it just start suddenly?
My fuel pump started going out and was causing backfiring, sputtering, and it didn't like to rev. I'd get a gauge on it...

we checked the fuel pressure and its 40psi while ildling
and up to around 50psi when reving the engine.

Does it do it all the time or is just a sperattic thing. I had a 97 2.5 that would do the same thing if I drove it long distances. I replaced the fuel pump and did have any more issues.
