Do they have the same transfer case? Is there any difference in the two.

I have a 95 wrangler with a worn out transfer case and have a low mileage case from a 95 Cherokee that I would like to swap in. This is the first time I have ever messed with a YJ. Any help would be appreciated.

This is not a yes/no question. What engine/tranny combinations do we have here.
The YJ should always be a NP 231, the XJ is probably a 231, but could be a full time NP231.
4-cylinder engines get the 21 input spline t-case, 6-cylinder get a 23 spline.
An XJ Automatic tranny (AW4) needs a shorter input shaft, not sure about YJ, but a TJ 5-speed input shaft is too long (I found this out the hard way, grrr...had to pull the TJ case apart and swap the XJ (AW4) input in...didn't want to cut it).
I've read different opinions about clocking, TJ/XJ seemed at least very close in my experience.

It's a 4 cylinder 5 speed yj, and the xj was a 6 cylinder auto. They are both part time.

So it sounds like they should both be np 231 cases, but I would most likely have to change the input shafts?

The tcase bolt pattern is all the same.

The difference is how the 6 bolt pattern is drilled in the back of the trans output. That the clocking difference. If you ware keeping the transmission with each respective vehicle then shouldn't be an issue.

I ran into this when putting an xj 5spd in a yj.

The 4 cyl yj will be 21 spline.

Not positive on the xj 6 cyl auto but I'm guessing that is 23 spline.

What's wrong with the yj one? There not too hard to get apart & rebuild.

Hold the chain sideways to check for wear.

Just make sure the oil pump and pickup tube get all back in the right spot when the rear housing goes back on. If not, it will burn up the bearings.

It just won't go into 4wd. The linkage is connected but no matter where you put the shifter, the front driveshaft doesn't engage. It's a little noisy too, like the chain is loose.

I have extra cases from my xj's through out the years and was hoping one would bolt in. Not that big a deal to tear it apart, I was just hoping I wouldn't have to.
