Thinking about getting a loan from my bank and getting rid of the 22re and swapping in a 454 with a turbo 400 tranny. Any ideas on how much cutting/fabrication would need to be done, if a radiator would fit in the engine bay and not have to be put in the bed, if they make a motor mount kit( I know they do for 350 swaps) and what I'd pay a shop(estimate) to do the swap with me supplying the motor and trans ready to go? Any and all info/opinions would be greatly appreciated! God bless

That sounds like about an 8k job to me. What they would charge is foreign to me because I don't use them. My honest opinion, sell the Toyota, buy an old beat up running or non running k series truck and do an axle swap. Way cheaper and easier and if you lucky you may even find one with a 454 and th400 already in it.

I speak from past experience and honestly just want to give you the best advice, not trying to take the wind out of your sails....

Do not finance a hobby!!!!

Do not finance a hobby!!!!

You will never be able to sell the truck and get your money back to pay off the loan, assuming no collateral would mean high interest personal loan, its really not a good idea man. Wait it out and do what you can out of pocket. If you can make a payment, you can pay yourself.

That said I would do a 5.3 from a half ton chevy pickup/suv

^^ yeah I left that part out. A$6k personal loan will turn into an $11k debt hanging over your head. Ask me how I know.

Yep. I just had to have a motorcycle when I was younger. Should have saved and bought a used one, ran out and bought a brand new one. Stupid high loan ($14,900), took two jobs, forever and lots of instant noodles to pay off.
If its not a need, don't finance it. Any toys and hobby's are 3rd-4th on the list.

Alright guys thanks for the advice I already have school loans over my head unfortunately, anyhow what about a 350 small block?

Do the ls it will be cheaper(ls stuff is cheaper that sb stuff now) and you will have a more dependable setup

To do an LS swap, let me run a few thoughts by you..
Complete 5.3 or 6.0 take out. $700-1400 for reasonable mileage.
Harness cut down and computer retune -$300-500.
Misc. Items can really add up. Keep in mind that a steam port must addressed, wether with a custom radiator with hose barb built in or tapped into heater hose/d&ted into water pump. A lot of folks assume you need an LS specific radiator and spend hundreds extra for one unnecessarily. If you use a truck or SUV take out engine, you may run into clearance problems due to intake and oil pan. Fuel system will be expensive. You'll need a pump that can keep up with 65 psi minimum. I've got $500 in pump, lines and fittings alone. Then you'll need a fuel cell. Or save a few dollars and use a complete tank and pump from donor truck (if you can fit it). Adapters must be used to use aftermarket gauges. But, the LS will bolt up to any decent 4x4 or 2x4 gm transmissions and as we all learn, the power benefits and fuel economy make up for it 10x. But is it cheaper? Shit no.

One more thing, depending how careful the junkyard engine pullers are, they tend to leave out important things like mass airflow sensors ($100+ new ), o2 sensors ($20-$80 each). Then to install o2 sensors you'll need 18mm weld in bungs and those alone can run $20-40 a pair unless you cut/reuse. A starter new will cost you upwards of $200 and are easy to break the posts off of in the pulling and installation process. There's also the fitting on the back of the intake that accepts the hose for your vacuum brake booster. Some have it, some don't.

What kind of drivetrain do you currently have?

A 454 is massive for that engine bay and a lot for a stock frame. Anything can be done with time and money. I agree, an LS is easier, readily available, lighter, smaller, and could make very similar power. Question is, are you going to build yourself out of your current axle and suspension setup?

80 for a new MAF, 4.95 each for 02 bungs :D It's not cheaper, but worth it.

Yeah current axle and suspension setup. I'm installing 1 tons in a few weeks at galloways

Also keep in mind cost of custom exhaust, everything from the headers back will have to be fabricated.

Also the Toy engine bays are not deep, a SAS is required for most any swap, sounds like you're good there but make sure you got plenty of room.
