i have recently purchased a set of 4:56 gears what do i need to get as far as installing the gears i dought the whole rear and front diff. but it will need all new brackets and brakes so i think it will be cheaper to just change gears

swapping gears will be cheaper likely, at least the front.. swap rear ends and put your brakes on it, takes about 2-5 hours depending on rust, busted knuckles, tire size, and if I remember to wave the dead fish over it before a road test-- jk.

to DIY: marking compound (white lead), dial indicator, in-lb torque wrench, fresh gear oil, and a fsm... oh patience too!

or go see ECGS or one of the other vendors..

first you need a 3.73 and lower ratio carrier. the 4.56 will not mount to it. then u will need a bearing and seal kit. or just bearings. then everything mentioned above to set it up.... and ill put more emphasis on the word PACIENCE

did you get the whole axles or gears plus carrier or just gears? I think he got the whole axles, in which case he's got the carrier. (and I think that the 4.56 will bolt to the 3.55 higher carrier but it will grenade.. I think I remember someone doing that and reading about it)

(raises hand...) 4.56 *WILL* bolt on to the 3.55 carrier. It *WILL* grenade. <-- first hand experience, less than 5 mins to boom. :D

What did the donor axles come out of? The gear swap will likely be easier and cheaper. Especially if you need all new braking components, coil buckets, tabs, etc...

As far as the gear swap goes. *I* would do a complete reinstall including bearings. However, you could "probably" get away with a mini-install kit if the donor axles had a fresh gear swap done. You'll need one install kit per axle. Master install kit is around $110. Mini kits can be had for around $40. East Coast is your best bet for these kits in my opinion.

If you are doing the install yourself you might as well purchase some tools. Harbor Freight is where it's at! You can get the dial indicator with magnetic stand quite cheap. You'll also need a shop press if you plan to change the bearings. Buy HFs middle sized one. I think it's 12 ton? You may know someone who has these tools though. :)

well i said i have the carrier I bought the complete axles from brakes to brakes with the 456 gears in them i dont want the front because its a disco axle the rear would work I just think I'd be better off with mine
