My friend recently bought a 96 F350 diesel with 7.3. We knew it had problems when we got it. We changed the fuel filter and drove it a couple hundred miles with no problems. Then it ran out of fuel in the fuel bowl. We pulled the tanks and cleaned them and it ran fine for maybe 100 miles then no fuel in the bowl. Changed the filter and it was ok again, but shortly thereafter no fuel in bowl. It only has a mechanical pump, but I don't think a mechanical pump would have a symptom like this. The fuel strainers on both tanks are missing so it could have sucked in some trash. Maybe there is something in the pump physically blocking it when jarred a certain way? The other thought is that the tank selector doesn't work, so maybe on occasion the selector has an issue and doesn't allow fuel to get to the pump. Any suggestions on what to do?

I thought about that too, but with the special fuel line fittings that can be difficult without cutting lines and damaging them.

I could be wrong but I think on some of the older ones there is some type of anti drainback valve. Maybe do some google work around that. I think I saw something about it when installing an electric system on my 97.

fuel probllem

most good fuel pressure kits has an adaptor to ck fuel pressure inline at the ford filter. borrow one and connect on engine side of selector valve and a 5 gal of fuel to the other.
done this on a lot of fords and road test. but i have seen a few of mech fuel pump failures on the 7.3s. mostly leak. also some aftermarket fuel filters dont depress the plunger in the center of the filter housing enough and will cause starvation. if all supply is good. the regulator at the top of the housing has a filter air bleed setup. this will sometimes clogg with injector o-ring material. diesel equipment in greensboro carries the seal kit to reseal the fuel filter housing. if you end up replacing the pump, when you remove the filter housing, clean the entire reg assy. and dont drop the fuel pump push rod,.
