I bought a '96 Tacoma about two weeks ago and noticed an oddity with the front wheel hubs. The driver's side has a black cap in the center of the wheel. The passenger's side has a lockout. I'm trying to figure out which side is correct. From my research, I'm thinking the driver's side is original, and the popular swap was to put lockouts on them. Can someone with more knowledge help me out?

96 would most likely have came with lock out hubs, I think the ADD wasn't prevalent till 99ish. Your actually better off strength wise with the ADD shafts, 27 vs. 30 at the hub I think. Easiest way to check is look at the front diff, if the "long side tube" doesn't have the ADD on it then it came with lock outs. That is assuming someone didn't change that as well.

Why on earth would somebody swap one and not the other. My 97 was ADD.

The front diff does have electronics on it, so I'm guessing it has ADD. Also makes sense that the hub caps for the factory alloy wheels that I've been searching for don't have center openings. So what should I do, swap one side to ADD or lockouts? Lockouts would save parasitic drag and wear on CV boots, along with a 2-low option without messing with the electronics.

This truck was wrecked on the front passenger side. I guess they replaced it with what was around.

If it were me I'd change the lock out to the ADD shaft. Less work and you never have to get out and lock hubs in.

Yep. Whichever you swap, you have to swap everything including the steering knuckle.
