96 Tracker 4x4

Hello.I've got a 96 geo tracker 4x4 5-speed.It whines in 1-3rd but not in 4-5th.
The clutch releases almost as soon as I let it up.It will pop out of 4th if under a load.
Clutch and tranny or possible T-case trouble?Thanks ahead of time.
 
I know this may sound funny, but it could be in the bottom end of you engine. Does it make the noise while not in gear and sitting still with the clutch out? does the noise go away when you push the clutch in during any circumstances? very possible it could be the main bearings. sounds like the shaft is moving back and forth. It can last for a while like this though. Just keep in mind that it is impossible to diagnose over the internet.
 
Have you tried simply changing fluid? It's probably bearings and/or synchros going out, but fresh fluid may gain you a few thousand miles before the inevitable rebuild.
 
Thanks for the tips.I'm going to get another tranny.Anyone know how tough a R&R is?I thought about buying jackstands and some more tools with the 300 I've been quoted for swap and doing it myself.How tough is it?Thanks
 
It probably won't be too bad. I couldn't tell you if it would be easier to pull it with the engine out of the bay, or drop it from underneath. If you've got any major work you want to do to the motor, though, now would be the time.
