My 96 xj wont crank.
Heres what the deal is, i got the jeep back in feb. ,whoever had this jeep b4 me is a dumbass, the wiring was crazy they didn't even have temp sendin unit hooked up. well fixed that then the head gasket blew, then we found out the whole motor was toast. So we got a new motor with less than 20k on it. we put it in got it all hooked but now it will turn over but not crank. this is where it gets confusing it shows theres no fire but if u put starting fluid in it it will run for bout 4 second. anyone have an idea?

and thanks to all the guys in other thread. im putting this one up since my build thread has turned to tech.

ps i have replaced the plugs plug wires distributor epu cps fuses and relays

Spark could be 180 off?

Best thing to do is get a scanner on it and see if all the sensors are working right.

im betting the distributor is off by 180. or you have the wrong ecu in it. have you checked all grounds? be sur the cylinders arent full of gas or it wont crank ether. even if its off by a toth or 2 it wont run

ok checked and double checked even tried old distributor its in there right....but to be sure im doing it right seein as how the last thing i put a dist. in was carb. engine, i put the engine on top dead center and i made sure the module was pointing to cyclinder 1. is that the correct way to put it in?.....its not throwing any codes

It has to be on TDC on the right stroke. Take the plug out of number one and put your finger over the hole. As you're turning the engine over by hand toward TDC it should have pressure. If it doesn't, wrong stroke. Spin the crank 360 and try again

ok it had pressure put it on tdc made sure the module was pointing to cyclinder 1.... still wont run.....it will crank and crank but wont run

well guys looks like im gonna be takin the front of my motor off to adjust the timin....u can barely even tell lookin at it that its off but it is.....thanks for the advice guys i really appreciate it

Also, see what kind of timing chain it is and how many key ways it has. It could be that it is off on the key ways and causing it not to start. Good luck. I have a 355 I'm building so I'll probably run into the same problems you've had with it starting.
