I did a little searching on here and came up with nothing. I have not messed with the diesel scene for a while and want your suggestions. M-I-L has a 98.5 2500 4x4 dodge and wants to add a programmer to it for mileage mostly. It has had an injector pump installed within the last 2 years and I put a lift pump and guage on it earlier than that. Still stock lift pump and auto tranny. 150K miles. I know the fueling issues and tranny issues that tend to happen. Trans seems healthy. Should I tell her to not do it? Or would a low horse programmer make it with the stock lift pump and tranny. If so, what would be the suggestion for the tuner.

The edge comp is the most versatile and stable box with a max power increase of around 120. Any programmer will be limited to 60-70rwhp. Lift pumps are not really a issue in regards of delivery until the 200-300rwhp increase range however any increase in fuel demand a fuel pressure gauge should be mandatory. Honestly I'd be terrified the factory l/p would crap out under typical driving conditions on a factory truck.
If the bands have regularly been adjusted and the trans has been maintained as it should have been a 50 horse increase shouldn't kill it right off but keep in mind that the factory power levels were enough to hurt a unit that hadnt been maintained correctly. Any increase in power will decrease the life of the transmission in any vehicle. Large increases in low boost fueling seem to really wipe these transmissions out. Built correctly a 47re is a prrtty stout unit. Long story short a smarty with mild timing and fueling settings may be the best choice for this application.

I know a guy that completely smoked an alleged "fresh rebuild" dodge trans with only the free mods on a 94 12v within 3k miles! lol, and as a result, I have about zero faith in them, so this is my biased opinion.

If she is in purely for the milage(cost savings) and you have already done the intake/exhaust, I'd tell her to start saving money towards going WVO. That will pay you back way quicker than a tuner and not risk expensive tranny repairs.

fwiw, poor line pressure and band adjustment will do that for you - fail immediately.

Honestly, the best investment for fuel economy is a cheap 4cylinder car. also doubles as insurance when something does shit the bed:D

The free mods on a 12v can exceed 100rwhp lol

thanks for the replies. If it were me, I would not do anything without some other upgrades. To me it's not worth the risk at this point. That's most likely what I will tell her.

You will never pay for the tuner with mileage gains...if you also want extra tire smoke, go for it, purely economical it will never work out
