Ok my clutch stopped working today. I will have to fix it on my own as I really cant afford the parts so paying someone to fix it is out of the question. Anyway about a month ago top 1" of clutch travel was mushy but still shifted fine. I checked fluid and it was dirty but not low or empty. It seemed to get better then worse until it just stayed mushy on the top inch or two. Yesterday it got even worse on my way home prob the top 4 inches were mushy but still shifted. This morning I did not have enough travel to get it in gear. Like trying to with out having the clutch pushed down all the way. I can start it in 1st or reverse to move it around. At first I was thinking it was totally in the hydraulics but now im not sure. Slave cylinder is in the tranny. You can bleed it but I have not figured this out yet. It just looks like a bolt or something but not what was on my brakes when I bled them. Remember its in the tranny and I really cant see anything but the line going in and the hole above it with like a bolt. So after reading this do you think its the hydrolics or could it still be just a worn clutch but I think a worn one would just slip, and show no signs in the pedal. Opinions Welcome Kinda Desperate Here

how many miles? this sounds like a release bearing/slave cylinder setup like the older yj jeeps had. it was and is a pain in the butt. depending on mileage/driving style the clutch may or may not need replacing. if the slave cylinder is in the tranny like you say then a new one should come with your clutch kit. sometimes i wander what the autom design engineers were thinking when they designed such junk like that. hope this helps.

Could be the clutch master cylinder also. Easier to get to than the internal slave. You should be able to take it off and disassemble and possibly tell if the rubber inside is deteriorating. If you don't see any obvious breakdown there you'll have to pull the tranny and check the slave. Dosen't sound like a clutch disc/pressure plate issue to me.
