My father-inlaw has a 98 Ranger 4.0/auto 4wd. He's had problems getting the tcase to shift into low range. He's replaced the relay, the electric motor on the tcase and still it doesn't want to go into low range. He told me he can take the motor off the tcase and manually shift it into low range with pliers, but when he tries the electric motor it blows the fuse and won't work. He would be happy to have a manual cable type shift if anyone makes one or has done this before. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Your options for a manual shift are to pick up a manual BW1354 or BW1350 from the JY. There is no way to convert the Electric 1354 that I'm aware of. Stock drive shaft should be compatible with the 1354. Check 90s model Rangers and Explorers.

For the current issue I have a bunch of diagnosis stuff at home. I’ll get back to this thread later.

common problems:

PVH hubs – Ruled out in your case because he has 4hi but if he hasn’t already, get a pair of AVM manual hubs. The PVH will fail.

Electric shift motor – Very prone to failure but you said he replaced it already. There is a good write-up on how to clean it out at therangerstation.com. Worth a shot before you $$ to replace it.

Dash switch transfer & case shift control module – probably where you’re having problems. Possibly a short somewhere if you’re blowing fuses. Check and test all the wiring between these and the t-case. The switches can go bad as can the module its self.

Tell me more about this, I have a 99 ranger and would like manual hubs. I thought the only option for 98 and up rangers was vacuum hubs or no hubs (explorer axle shafts).
