I got a 98 Suburban 4x4 5.7. The rear driveshaft broke off at the tail end of the transmission. Looks like I need to replace the transfer case, because it broke the yoke. Before I get into I was seeing what could be some causes for this to happen. Thanks for any info..

a lot of the transfer case in these trucks, np246 and 241c, specifically, suffer from breakage of the snap ring on the transfer case tailshaft. this causes poor gear engagement and bearing wear. you can replace just the snapring, or there's also a shaft "clamping collar" upgrade that permanently fixes the problem. a new snapring will eventually fail and need replacement again. to replace this, you only have to remove the driveshaft and the back extension housing of the transfer case-about 45 min. this may not be your problem, but would be a good spot to start

My suspect is the transfer case as well, there was a couple of clunks and then it just broke off and hit the ground. Thanks for the info.

What transfer case did you have? I have one from a 98 electronic shift in my garage. It could be used for parts. It was moaning before I had it replaced but the main shaft might be good.
