98 TJ 4.0 sputter major power loss

i have had a motor problem for about 6 mo now and its got worse over time. its like its only fireing on 5 cyl. i have maby 1/4 power (my buddy has a 4cyl and he has a ton more power) ive changed every ingition part i could think of even changed a valve and head gasket wtith no change. it takes about 5-10 key turns to crank and i have to just barley turn it where the motor just turns over a little and i have to do it about 5 to 10 times to get it to crank. if i just hold the key it will just turn over and over without cranking. it caught on fire due to a hole in the fule tank but no damage was caused. so i put a new tank and fuel pump in it and thats when it started. at first it ran great but was i had to crank it like a do now but had full power and after a few day it started to run horrible. it also idles at about 2500 rpm. i recently pulged it into a code reader. it said at idol the motor thought it was at 80% throttle and the ignition was like 20% fast or something like that (my buddy said the ingition was set as high as it could be) im complety stuppend on this i have checked everything i can think of all my wires, compression new parts etc. the only thing i havent check is the fuel pressure but i can find anyone that has one. im gunna try and put my old fuel pump in. it came with the tank and the guy said it was new but im not to sure about that. ive read about people having a similar problem but no one has a answer. but anything helps thanks for reading
 
I'm thinking about just dropping another engine in it. I'm just worried that i will still have the same problem. anyone think that would happen or do y'all think a new motor would run better?

A new engine before renting a fuel pressure gauge for free from Autozone?

Seriously, check fuel pressure.

i had the line off the rail today and turned the motor over for just a sec to see how much it was pumping and there is definatly no shortage of fuel i looked like a water hose turned wide open.

im waiting on pull-a-part to get the right year/model XJ so i can just get all 3 sensors off a throttle body
the code reader my buddy had also said that the timing wwas advanced 20% or something like that. cant remember exactly how much nut he saild it was advanced as much as it could be. im kinda leaning torwfd s tining sddue..
 
What year ya need. i got 5 or 6 throttle bodys laying around at the shop. i can get terrell to run em to ya. just pay me for the ones you use
 
hell yea matt. i got a 98 id like to just gett the tps, iac and what ever the other one is and just throw them in and see if that helps. if not ill bring them back if they do ill def buy them off you. whats you #? i cant get josh to come out here or barley even call me back lol
 
replaced the ignition coil a few days ago. the threads on the exhaust for the up stream o2 sensor are stripped bad. so im gunna put a new one in there and get it down tight then weld it on so it dosent leak. anyone know i welding the o2 sensor on will mess it up? i dont think it will but if anyone knows def let me know. im gunna try it anyway cuz i have 3 sensors

just weld a new boss on for the o2 sensor. weld up the existing one.
 
check tps, iac, and has anyone messed with distributor(timing)
or something as simple as a fuel filter???
 
well i put in a "newer" sending unit in. bought a gas tank from a shop and they said the sending unit was fairly new. i have great fuel pressure. i think it has something to do with is distributer ive never messed with it but i think its jumped a tooth or something. im assuming you put cyl 1 to TDC and set the dis to where the rotor button is pointing at the #1 tab. (if in not correct on how to set that please let me know before i screw something up of if theres a better way) also theres no marks on my crank to show TDC so it would be awesome if someone could tell me a good way to find it. one other thing my brake lights turn signals, and hazards do work at all. started out i would hit the turn singal and the hazards would come on. ive ran through every wire i could but could never find a short or any disconnected wire. idk if this could be related to my prob or not but just throwing it out there dont care about the lights i have small lights in the tail light hooked to switches by the shifter for brake lights and turn singals lol. but thanks for the advise any ideas help ill try any thing idk. just tired of throwing random parts at it with no result. thanks everyone keep you fingers crossed for me
 
got another throttle body with all the sensors on it from matt6679. cranks up way better and idols right. when it cranks up it sputters a lot but gets better. with no load on the motor it revs pretty good with just a little sputter and from idol to 3k it runs great with good power but just a little sputter. as soon as it hits 3k it loses 9/10 of the power and runs horrible. check engine light came on and it says high voltage to the tps. i have ran through the wires around the motor multiple time with no luck. i think it is the black and yellow wire that runs to the tps and a lot of other sensors. so 1/2 way there i think ima pull apart the dash panel and also get to the wiring by the trans. been in there before with no luck. ill post what i find

i think the check engine light code is where i need to go. i think there a short some where and its throwing off the tps and frying them. if anyone has an idea where i should start of any idea what to do throw it out here ill try anything now! thanks everyone
