I have noticed that when I come to a complete stop and I hit the gas to go again, there is a clunking almost like something is slipping into place before it catches and then goes....my first though is a u Joint in the rear drive shaft....front DS is removed at the moment, so I know its not that.

A ujoint wont "slip". If this noise is happening before the wheels start turning then it is most likely a gear missing some teeth or has worn out teeth. Manual trans or auto? With the Ebrake on, put rig in neutral and try to turn the driveshaft. Lift up and down on the pinion yoke. There shouldnt be any play in the pinion yoke except for the backlash of the gears. There should only be a very very slight amount of backlash. I'm up in greensboro not too far from you and can take a look if you really need someone else to check it out.

Lube the slip yoke on your rear driveshaft. I bet the transfer case output shaft splines are dry. If nothing else, it's a freebie.

Its not really a noise...just a feel. I hit the gas and there is "engaging" type feeling before the wheels start moving. If I go easy enough on the throttle, It will not do it and everything is fine.

Now, I've got a new one for you guys. I was going down the road with the AC on, not even full blast and I noticed smoke coming out of the top vents...I' guessing it was smoke...I didn't really smell anything and It didn't linger or anything...it could have just been where the air was really cold inside a hot car??? I'm not entirely sure...its never happened before until this morning...It goes away as soon as I turn the air off...The air feels nice and cold, but it just scared me a bit. Any idea?

The minute an XJ is taken off road you develop the first of many clangs and bangs and odd noises. Just turn the radio up and get used to it. I got an 01 that I just got running and driving, I forgot how noisy they were!

Took the jeep home for lunch and it seemed fine. Ran the A/C all the way home and the way back to work. no condensation that I could see. just worries me, that's all.

That ac thing is completely normal

I agree with the slipyolk splines needing grease. That puff of smoke probably is condensation, but it is also loaded with Benzine which is a cancer causing agent. Just saw an article about leaving your windows cracked while running the A/C, and let it come on for a while before getting in the car with the windows open to allow the benzine to escape. Benzine comes from the plastic in the car especially when it has been sitting in the sun all day closed up.
