Stock 98 XJ will vapor lock if it idles for a couple minutes. Last night in drive thru it just died. I pushed it over into a parking spot, popped the hood and used the key to bleed the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. Lots of air, very little fuel. After I bled the pressure of she fired back up like nothing happened. What is causing this? It's been this way since the day I got it.

I'm going to change the fuel pump (if I keep it) as soon as the tank gets low because of the double start check valve issue these things have anyway.

Don't mean to hi jack but I've never heard of this and wonder if I have the same issue. My 00 can sit for 2 weeks, fire right up, but if you go to the store and Coke right back out, it acts like it don't want to start, or it does start and runs like its missing. But if you cycle the key a couple times none of this happens. Or maybe I'm getting air in my lines too.

There is a check ball in the fuel pump that keeps the system pressurized when u turn the key off. When it goes bad you will have to prime the system then it runs fine. Mine is doing this while running, along with some other surging problems that I haven't figured out.

This. Replace the whole unit since the regulator is part of the sender. Also check for cracked exhaust manifold.
