Ive got a 99 jeep cherokee with the 4.0 and a 5 speed transmission. Recently it's been tough to start. I tried to fire it up the other day it made two clunks and didn't turn over and I stopped it. Tried to crank it again and it sounded like an electric motor was stuck. I recently replaced the battery so I know that is good. I pulled the starter and had it tested and that works as well. You can see a bit of marring on the flywheel from where the starter seem to be stuck. Clutch and flywheel were replaced 15k ago. I tried to hand crank the motor and all I did was tighten the bolt... I'm gonna try and move the jeep to get the flywheel to spin, put the starter back in and see what happens. Anyone ever experience this or have any other opinions?

Thanks

Assuming the starter is good then either it is not getting enough power or there is too much resistance.

The clutch could be stuck to the flywheel or other clutch pressure plate failure. Try putting the transfer case in neutral and see if you can start it.

Also it could be the starter, power wire going to the starter, batter connection, or ground wire from motor to body or from body to battery.

You can't trust a bench test on a starter because the is no load!....

Can you jump start it??.( roll start for the younger crowd)....

I've had arguments with parts people about their bench test too. Many I've seen work on the bench but won't turn the motor over. But if the OP can't turn the motor by hand, he may have other issues as well. If it's in neutral and can't turn by hand, pull all plugs and try to turn it..

Thanks everyone! That's what I was scared about... it does have 215k on the motor and the last 60k haven't been the easiest on it. The motor was in neutral and all I did was spin the crank bolt with the two foot breaker. It did struggle to start two days before but drove fine. I'm gonna try what y'all said this weekend when it warms up.
